Here is a description of the main features of DV Book
Manager 2.0:
The databases:
 | DV Book Manager manages more than 50 fields, among which the usual information
(title, author, publisher...), but also 3 location fields (to precise, for example,
bookcase, door, shelf), 8 keywords for easy and powerful searches, a field for comments or
summary which can have up to 65 000 characters, and fields to link books to files (texts,
pictures...) related to a book, which can be called by a single click. For example you can
link a book to the biography of its author.
|
 | The names of most of the fields can be personalized to fit your needs perfectly.
|
 | DV Book Manager can manage several databases, so that you can manage separately,
for example, novels and other books, or personal and professional books. You can create an
unlimited number of databases.
|
 | You can export a selection of books to a new DV Book Manager database, and also
import the books of a base in another, so that you can split you databases and amalgamate
them. You can also import and export books with other programs with the text-format
import/export feature.
|
The data capture:
Typing all the information of each book is always a long and boring task, that's why DV
Book Manager has several features to make it faster and easier.
 | Common entries allow you to fill some fields by simply choosing the required item
from the list. You can either fill the lists by using the Tools / Common entries menu or
let DV Book Manager fill them automatically. The lists are different for each field and
are accessible by clicking on the arrow located at the right of the text of the relevant
field.
|
 | All fields also have an autocomplete feature, as MS Internet Explorer: When you
type the beginning of a field value, DV Book Manager suggests you the end of it if you
have already typed it for another book.
|
 | You have to add several books with many fields in common ? Simply fill the data
of the first book, then duplicate the book as many times as you need, and complete the
other books by simply modifying the fields which are different !
|
 | If you want to complete the Mark field with a systematic method based on the
value of other fields, DV Book Manager can handle it automatically.
|
 | If you already have a text-format database of your books, for example from
another program, DV Book Manager can import it.
|
The consultation:
Searches and selections:
DV Book Manager features two kinds of search:
 | The single search selects the first book in the list which meets a criterion,
then the following one... You can use it by selecting the Book / Search menu.
|
 | The selection creates a new list which only contains books meeting a criteria.
This makes possible to display a customized list of books. For example, a list of books
whose category is Music or a list of books on Computing by a particular author and/or
publisher. These selections can be saved to be called by a single click.
|
Reports:
 | DV Book Manager can create various types of reports thanks to a very powerful
report function: you can use predefined templates or create new report templates, choosing
which fields are displayed, their layout, the font, the maximum size and many other
parameters thanks to a report wizard and a window which lets you modify the report by drag
& drop. A print preview is also available.
|
Data security:
 | DV Book Manager features a save/restore module which can save your data
compressed (database, common entries, saved selections, report templates) and of course
restore it !
|
PRO version only:
DV Book Manager Pro, which is mainly designed for associations, companies, schools... can
also:
 | Loan management:
 | Manage a database of borrowers |
 | Manage loans, with name of the borrower, the date the book was borrowed and the
one it is due to be returned |
 | A loan history for each book, to be able to see if it is popular or not. |
 | You can instantly check out the list of the borrowed books, and the list of the
ones which should have been returned but are not yet.
|
|
 | Multi-users use:
 | DV Book Manager Pro can share a database between some computers in a network,
which can view and modify it at the same time.
|
|
Attention: Even in the Pro version, DV Book Manager is not designed to manage
huge databases, or databases shared by numerous users at the same time. It is dedicaced to
schools, associations or companies who want to manage a books database, but is not
suitable for commercial or public libraries.
